STORRS, Conn. - UConn head men's hockey coach Mike Cavanaugh announced the Huskies non-conference opponents for the 2014-15 season, their inaugural campaign as a member of Hockey East. The Huskies will face teams from the ECAC, Big Ten, NCHC and Atlantic Hockey and participate in a pair of tournaments this coming season.
The 2014-15 season will get underway on the road on Friday, October 11th and Saturday, October 12th as the Huskies head to Penn State for a pair of games at Pegula Ice Arena. The Huskies and Nittany Lions met for the first and only time during the 2012-13 season. UConn posted a pair of wins over Penn State at home, 2-0 and 4-1, during their program's first season of play.
The Huskies will play five games this upcoming season at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport starting on Tuesday, October 21st against the Quinnipiac Bobcats. UConn and Quinnipiac last met on the ice in 2012-13, a 2-1 Bobcat win on their home ice in Hamden. The all-time series with Quinnipiac is tied up at 12-12-4.
UConn will also play a pair of games at Webster Bank Arena as part of the first-ever Frozen Holiday Classic tournament. The four team field will feature the Huskies, Sacred Heart University, fellow Hockey East member UMass Lowell and defending national champion Union College. The two-day event is scheduled for Saturday, December 27th and Sunday, December 28th.
On Tuesday, January 6th, the Huskies will host Colorado College at the Bridgeport arena and return their again to play host to Notre Dame, date to be announced. The Huskies and Colorado College Tigers have never met on the ice.
The Huskies will also participate in the Liberty Hockey Invitational hosted by Princeton University at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The event, in its second year, will annually feature the Tigers and Yale University and two teams from Hockey East. This year's two-day event is scheduled for October 31st and November 1st and has the host Tigers, Yale, Merrimack and the Huskies.
The schedule will feature additional match-ups against the ECAC when UConn host Rensselaer at the XL Center in Hartford on Tuesday November 18th and travel to Brown University on Saturday, November 29th. The last meeting with RPI came during the 2010-11 season, a 6-5 win by the Engineers to grab a 3-0-2 lead in the all-time series. UConn and Brown met for the first time back in 1961-62 and the Bears hold a 4-1-1 edge in the series. The two teams last met during the 2009-10 season, an 8-1 Brown win at home. UConn's lone win in the series came in 2008-09, 4-1 in Providence.
This year's non-league slate will feature a pair of Atlantic Hockey teams as UConn will host Sacred Heart on Friday, November 14th (site to be determined) and travel to West Point, N.Y. to face Army on Friday, January 9th. Last year, UConn split their four games with the Pioneers and went 2-1 against the Black Knights in their farewell season in the AHA.
The 22-game Hockey East schedule will be announced at a later date.
