Men's Hockey Puts 12 on HEA All-Academic Team

STORRS, Conn.
– The UConn men’s hockey program placed 12 student-athletes on the 2016-17 Hockey East All-Academic Team announced on Wednesday. The league announced that a record 149 student-athletes have earned a spot on this year’s team.

Five Huskies have earned the honor for the third-straight season in rising seniors Johnny Austin (St. Louis Park, Minn.), Spencer Naas (Minnetonka, Minn.), Kasperi Ojantakanen (Helsinki, Finland), Steve Thulin (North Reading, Mass.) and Jeff Wight (Coquitlam, British Columbia).

Rising senior Jesse Schwartz (Toronto, Ontario) and recent graduate Joona Kunnas (Vantaa, Finland) were both honored with a spot for the second-straight season.

First-time honorees on the Hockey East All-Academic Team are rising senior Tanner Creel (Arlington Heights, Ill.), rising junior Maxim Letunov (Moscow, Russia), and rising sophomores Bryan Nelson (Upton, Mass.) and Philip Nyberg (Linkoping, Sweden) and recent graduate Evan Richardson (Nanaimo, British Columbia).


 

 

Student-Athletes named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better in each of the two academic periods during which he was actively competing. The Huskies matched their high mark of 12 student-athletes, set in 2015-16.
