STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's hockey team announced their full 2016-17 schedule on Thursday. The Huskies will face 10 teams who participated in the 2016 NCAA Tournament including a pair of Frozen Four clubs. In addition to their 22-game Hockey East slate, the Huskies will take on teams from the Big Ten, ECAC, NCHC, Atlantic Hockey and the WCHA.
For the first time since the 2007-08 season, the Huskies will open the year on their home ice when they play host to Alabama Huntsville at the XL Center on October 7th and 8th. UConn will play a 14-game home schedule at the XL Center this season, their third year at the downtown Hartford arena. The Huskies averaged 5,129 fans a game last season, second in Hockey East.
Following the season-opening series with UAH, the Huskies hit the road for three-straight non-conference match-ups. UConn heads to western New York for games against Colgate and RIT on October 14th and 15th. The Huskies return to Connecticut and will head to state rival Quinnipiac on October 19th. The Bobcats played for the national championship for the second time in their program's history last season, falling to North Dakota.
For the first time in program history the Huskies will meet Ohio State on the ice when they travel to Columbus, Ohio for a two-game series November 11th and 12th. The Huskies are 2-4-1 all-time against teams from the Big Ten. UConn has faced Penn State more than any other team from the league posting a 2-1-1 mark. The Huskies fell to Minnesota last season, 3-2, at the Mariucci Classic and lost to then No. 5 ranked Michigan, 7-5, during the 2006-07 season. The Huskies lost to Wisconsin, 8-1, way back during the 1966-67 season.
For the second-consecutive season, the Huskies will head to Arizona to take part in the Desert Hockey Classic. UConn will join host Arizona State along with Brown University and St. Cloud State in this year's tournament set to take place on December 30th and 31st. The site for this year's event is yet to be announced by ASU. In last year's classic, the Huskies fell to Michigan Tech, 4-2, before rebounding for a 3-0 win over the Sun Devils.
The non-conference schedule is rounded out with previously announced home match-ups against American International (October 21st) and Sacred Heart (November 26th) of Atlantic Hockey and Yale University (January 7th) of the ECAC.
The Huskies will open up Hockey East play on the road with a two-game series at Notre Dame on October 27th and 28th. UConn will play home-and-home series with the rest of the league with the exception of Maine. The Huskies and Black Bears will meet as part of the just announced Frozen Fenway 2017 on January 14th. UConn will also host Maine on January 12th at a site to be announced at a later date.
The 2017 Hockey East Tournament will get underway on March 3rd through 5th with opening round best-of-three series between the league's bottom eight teams. The top-four seeds will host best-of-three quarterfinal series on March 10th through 12th with the winners moving on the Hockey East final four at TD Garden on March 17th and 18th.
