STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut Head Coach Mike Cavanaugh announced that David Drake (Naperville, Ill.) has signed a national letter-of-intent to join the Husky hockey program for the 2014-15 season.
Drake will be one of 11 new players on the UConn roster in 2014-15 as the Huskies begin play this season in Hockey East. He joins fellow freshmen Derek Pratt (Mount Hermon, Mass.), Johnny Austin (St. Louis Park, Minn.), Spencer Naas (St. Louis Park, Minn.), Jesse Schwartz (Toronto, Ontario), Corey Ronan (Franklin, Mass.), Will Golonka (Carlisle, Mass.), Jeff Wight (Coquitlam, B.C.), Kasperi Ojantakanen (Helsinki, Finland) and Steve Thulin (North Reading, Mass.) along with sophomore transfer Evan Richardson (Nanaimo, B.C.) in making up this year's incoming class.
Drake is a left handed defenseman who play all of last season with Des Moines Buccaneers of the United State Hockey League (USHL). In 51 games last season, he registered five assists. In 2012-13, Drake split time between the Buccaneers, appearing in 12 games with a goal, and the Chicago Fury U18 (T1EHL). With the Fury, he played in 40 games and scored two goals with a pair of assists.
He becomes the third defensemen for the Huskies taken in the NHL Entry Draft. Drake was taken in the 2013 NHL Draft, selected in the seventh round, 192 overall by the Philadelphia Flyers. Sophomore defensman Ryan Segalla (Rockland, Mass.) was also taken in the 2013 draft, picked in the fourth round, 119th overall, by the Pittsburgh Penguins. In this past June's NHL Entry Draft, Miles Gendron (Shrewsbury, Mass.), who has signed a NLI and will join the Huskies for the 2015-16 season, was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the third round, 70th overall.
