HAVERHILL, Mass. (September 27) - The University of Connecticut men's hockey team was picked to finish seventh in the Atlantic Hockey Association according to a poll of the league's coaches released today. The Huskies received 34 total points in the poll.
The defending regular season champions, Rochester Institute of Technology was named the regular season favorite, receiving eight of the 10 first place votes and 80 points total. Air Force, the 2007 tournament champions was picked second receiving one first place vote and 67 points. Army was picked third with 58 total points, and Mercyhurst was picked fourth, receiving the final first place vote and 55 total points.
UConn will feature a young squad with only one senior in forward Charles Solberg (Barrington, Ill.). However several talented players remain. Junior forward Chris Myhro (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was second on the team last year with 20 goals, as well as tied for fifth with 11 assists. Junior defenseman Sean Erickson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) who along with Solberg was named team captain, recorded 18 assists a year ago, and will be counted on to anchor the Husky defense. Connecticut also returns their starting goaltender in sophomore Beau Erickson (Hinton, Iowa), who recorded a 10-7-2 record as well as a 2.92 goals against average as a freshman last season. UConn also brings in 16 newcomers to help replace the scoring load of the departed seniors from a year ago.
The 2007-08 men's hockey team begins its season on October 14 with an exhibition against Ryerson University. Game time is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. at the Freitas Ice Forum. The regular season begins on October 19 with a home game against Atlantic Hockey Association rival American International at 7:05 p.m.
