2016 Hockey East Media Day
BOSTON, Mass. - The Hockey East Association held its annual Media Day event at TD Garden in Boston on Monday where the Preseason Coaches’ Poll was announced. UConn Head Coach Mike Cavanaugh was in attendance to meet with members of the media.
UConn was tabbed to finish seventh in the annual vote of the league's head coaches as the Huskies prepare to launch their third season of play in the historic league. The Huskies have outperformed their preseason slot in each of their first two seasons in Hockey East.
Last season, UConn was picked ninth in the preseason poll and went on to finish eighth in the final standings and earn the program’s first home playoff series in just their second season. In the Huskies inaugural season, UConn was picked 12th in the preseason vote and played their way to a ninth place finish in the final league standings.
The Boston University Terriers were tabbed as the preseason favorite in this year’s poll, earning 10 first place votes. Northeastern, last season’s HEA tournament champions, earned one first place vote and were slotted second. Notre Dame, entering their final season in the league, were tabbed third and UMass Lowell, earning the other lone first place nod, came in fourth.
Defending regular season co-champions Providence and Boston College were fifth and sixth in the poll, respectively. Following the Huskies in seventh were Vermont, Merrimack, New Hampshire, UMass and Maine in the eighth through twelve spots.
The league also announced their upcoming TV package with games again set to air through the American Sports Network (ASN) and NESN. UConn will appear twice on this year’s package. The Huskies home game against UMass on Friday, December 9th and their road game at Vermont on Friday, January 20th will appear on the package this season. Game times for both games have been adjusted with puck drop against UMass now at 6:30 pm and at Vermont at 6:00 pm. Additional networks where games will be shown will be announced at a later date.
The 25th recipient of the league's Joe Concannon Award was also announced on Monday, honoring a member of the media who has done an outstanding job covering Hockey East. This year's winner is Ted Ryan who has covered Vermont for the Ruthland Hearld and Burling Free Press for the past 45 years.
The league also announced on Monday that tickets for the 2017 Hockey East Championship Tournament at the TD Gard will go on sale Friday, October 7th at 11:00 am. Tickets will be on sale at the TD Garden Box Office and available online at ticketmaster.com or by calling Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000.
The Huskies will open their season with an exhibition game this Saturday, October 1st against St. Francis Xavier at Freitas Ice Forum. UConn opens the regular season with a two-game series at home in the XL Center with Alabama Huntsville October 7th and 8th.
