STORRS, Conn. - UConn senior Rob Nichols (Dallas, Texas) was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after a stellar weekend that saw the senior netminder post back-to-back shutouts over Alabama Huntsville.
For the second time in his career, and the second time in school history, Nichols came up with consecutive clean sheets, blanking UAH 6-0 and 4-0 at the XL Center in the season opening series. On Friday night, Nichols made 21 saves, 11 of which came in the second period, on the way to a a 6-0 shutout victory. On Saturday, he turned away 10 shots in the first period en route to stopping all 23 shots he faced on the night for a 4-0 win.
For Nichols, it was the ninth and 10th shutouts of his career. Last season, he became the first goaltender in school history with consecutive shutouts after beating Arizona State, 3-0, and Maine, 1-0, both on the road.
The senior goaltender and the rest of the Huskies will hit the road this weekend to upstate New York where they will face Colgate on Friday night and old Atlantic Hockey foe RIT on Saturday.
