STORRS, Conn. - UConn senior Trevor Gerling (Seattle, Wash.) and sophomore Rob Nichols (Dallas, Texas) took home a pair of Hockey East weekly honors this week for helping the Huskies upset No. 3 ranked Boston College and earn a tie on the road at No. 5 ranked Boston University last week. Gerling was named the Warrior Hockey Player of the Week while Nichols earned the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week award. Both honors mark the first Hockey East weekly awards given to UConn.
Gerling tied his career high with four points (2g, 2a) Saturday to help UConn skate to a 4-4 tie at No. 5 Boston University, finishing the night with a plus-two rating. In Wednesday's 1-0 victory over No. 3 Boston College, the first-ever meeting between the two programs, the senior forward generated a team-high five shots on net for the Huskies.
Sophomore goaltender and Dallas native Nichols posted his first shutout of the season and third of his career as UConn knocked off No. 3 Boston College, 1-0, Wednesday. In the Huskies home opener at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut, Nichols turned away all 35 shots, including a 16-shot barrage in the second period. Nichols came back to make 30 saves Saturday night as the Huskies earned a 4-4 tie at No. 5 Boston University.
Gerling and Nichols will lead the Huskies as they take on the Sacred Heart Pioneers this Friday, November 14th at The Taft School in Watertown, Conn.
