STORRS, Conn. – Head coach Mike Cavanaugh and the University of Connecticut men’s hockey program announced that seven student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent during the fall early signing period to play for the Huskies.  Jeff Wight (Coquitlam, British Columbia), Corey Ronan (Franklin, Mass.), Will Golonka (Carlisle, Mass.), Jesse Schwartz (Toronto, Ontario), Miles Gendron (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Derrick Pratt (Mount Hermon, Mass.) and Karl El-Mir (Greenfield Park, Quebec) have all committed to attend UConn.

“We are tremendously excited about this group of student-athletes that make up our first recruiting class,” stated Cavanaugh, currently in his first season at the helm of the UConn hockey program.  “This is a talented group that will help lead us in our transition to Hockey East.”

Jeff Wight is a 6-2, 180 pound forward from Coquitlam, British Columbia.  Wight was selected to play for Team Canada West in the 2013 World Junior A Challenge and was recently named to the NHL Central Scouting’s November players to watch list for the 2014 NHL Draft.  In 2012-13, he played his rookie season in the British Columbia Hockey League, scoring 13 goals with 10 assists.  This season, he has 12 goals and 11 assists through 24 games for the Merritt Centennials.

Corey Ronan will come to UConn by way of St. Sebastian’s School where he played for head coach Sean McCann.  The Franklin, Massachusetts native is a 5-7, 150 pound forward and son of Ed Ronan, former Boston University standout and draft pick of the Montreal Canadians, winning the Stanley Cup in 1993.  Ronan played for the US at the 212 U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.  He scored 11 goals with 19 assists in 2012-13 and had 14 goals and 18 assists as a sophomore in 2011-12.  His USHL rights are owned by the Muskegon Lumberjacks.

Miles Gendron is a 6-2, 175 pound defenseman from Shrewsbury, Massachusetts and the Rivers School.  Gendron was named to the NHL Central Scouting's November 2014 players to watch list for the 2014 NHL Draft.  He had 28 points on 12 goals and 16 assists as a junior in 2012-13 playing for head coach Shawn MacEachern at Rivers School.  As a sophomore he posted a 16 point season in 2010-11.  Gendron also played for the Neponset Valley River Rats U18 team and was drafted by Lincoln Stars in the USHL Entry Draft.  He was picked in the 2013 QMJHL Draft by the Moncton Wildcats.

Jesse Schwartz hails from Toronto, Ontario and is a 6-0, 180 pound forward currently playing for the Victoria Grizzlies in the British Columbia League.  Schwartz has played in 23 games in 2013-14 and is third on the team in scoring with 10 goals and 17 assists.  He has five game-winning goals.  In 2010-11 he played for the Mississauga Chargers in the OJHL and scored 12 goals with 20 assists in 46 games.        

Derek Pratt is a 6-0, 185 pound defensemen from Mount Hermon, Massachusetts.  Pratt is currently playing with the Waterloo Blackhawks in the USHL and has appeared in 20 games this season.  In 2012-13, Pratt recorded seven points on a goal and six assists for the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs in the EJHL.

Will Golonka is a 5-10, 165 pound forward from Carlisle, Massachusetts who will come to UConn from the Belmont Hill School.  In 2012-13, Golonka posted 23 goals, 18 assists and 41 points in 28 games for Belmont Hill.  As a sophomore, he scored 20 points on 8 goals and 12 assist in 2011-12.

Karl El-Mir is from Greenfield Park, Quebec and is a 6-0, 150 pound forward.  He currently plays for Selects Hockey Academy U16 at South Kent School.  El-Mir was drafted in 2013 by Indiana Ice in USHL Entry Draft.
