STORRS, Conn. - UConn sophomore Tage Thompson (Orange, Conn.) is one of 27 players named to the 2017 U.S. National Junior Team preliminary roster announced by USA Hockey on Monday. Thompson will be competing for a spot on the final 23-man roster that will make-up Team USA at the 2017 World Junior Championships on December 26th through January 7th.
The players will be attending training camp December 16th-20th at HarborCenter in Buffalo, N.Y. followed by an additional camp in Oshawa, Ontario from December 20th-24th where they will play pre-tournament games against Switzerland and the Czech Republic. The final 23-man roster is expected to be announced by December 24th.
Thompson, a first-round pick (26th overall) by the St. Louis Blues in the 2016 NHL Draft, is leading the Huskies in scoring this season. Through 17 games, Thompson has 18 points coming on 10 goals and eight assists. He is tied for fifth in Hockey East with 10 goals and tied for 10th in points.
He has five power play goals and leads the team with 10 power play points. Over his 53 games at UConn, Thompson has collected 50 points on 24 goals and 26 assists.
Thompson has ties to USA Hockey, skating as a member of the U.S. National Team Development Program (NTDP) prior to coming to Storrs. He was a member of the 2015 NTDP team that won gold at the 2014 IIHF U18 World Championship.
He is one of 12 players from Hockey East programs to make the 2017 preliminary roster for Team USA.
The 2017 World Junior Championships will be held at the Bell Centre in Montreal and the Air Canada Centre in Toronto from Dec. 26, 2016 through Jan. 5, 2017.
