STORRS, Conn. – UConn head coach Mike Cavanaugh announced on Thursday that the men’s hockey team has added freshman defenseman Philip Nyberg (Linköping, Sweden) to the team and he will be available to play for the Huskies starting this weekend at the Desert Hockey Classic.
Nyberg is a 6-4, 200 pound defenseman who comes to Storrs after playing 25 games with the Madison Capitols of the USHL this fall. He was selected in the 2016 NHL Draft by the Buffalo Sabres in the fifth round, 129th overall.
The Swedish born defenseman had nine points in 25 games with Madison, scoring a pair of goals with seven assists. He also registered 16 penalty minutes for the Capitols. Prior to his time in Madison, Nyberg spent the previous season skating for Linköping HC J20 in the Swedish Hockey League. In 45 regular-season contests, he posted four goals and 18 points and added a goal in four playoff games.
In 2014-15, Nyberg skated three games with the same Linköping HC J20 squad, but played the majority of the year with Linköping HC J18, serving as an assistant captain. He had three goals and 12 points in 20 games playing in the J18 Elit league, as well as two assists in nine games in the J18 Allsvenskan league.
Nyberg joins the Huskies defensive unit anchored by junior captain Derek Pratt (Mount Hermon, Mass.) and junior alternate captain David Drake (Naperville, Ill.). He will give the Huskies eight defensemen on the roster with the departure of senior Joona Kunnas (Vantaa, Finland), who left the program to return to Finland to play professionally.
