STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's soccer team opened the 2012 preseason with a 2-0 victory over UMass in an exhibition at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. The Huskies will close out the preseason with an exhibition against Stony Brook on Saturday, August 18 at 7 p.m. in Storrs.
Connecticut opened the scoring with a successful penalty kick converted by junior forward Mamadou Doudou Diouf (Dakar, Senegal) 8:39 into the contest. The lone goal of the half was created when sophomore forward Allando Matheson (North York, Ontario) was tripped up in the box by UMass goalkeeper Brian Frame.
The Huskies kept possession for the majority of the half with few scoring opportunities. Neither keeper made a save in the opening 45 minutes.
Connecticut started a complete new lineup in the second half with the exception of Matheson up top. The lone holdover from the first half made it 2-0 just 3:13 in the stanza after a give-and-go with junior Juho Karppinen (Kuopio, Finland) inside the box. Matheson notched four goals in 2011, with all four serving as game winners.
Massachusetts' best chance of the contest came with just 2:00 remaining. After a foul by Connecticut 25 yards out, UMass midfielder Connor Devino bent a free kick over the wall forcing a diving save from substitute keeper Greg O'Brien.
The first match of the regular season will take place on Saturday, August 25 at 7 p.m. in Storrs against St. Francis.
