NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No.13/24 UConn men’s soccer team stayed red-hot on Tuesday night, dropping in-state foe Yale, 1-0, at Reese Stadium. With the win, Connecticut extends its season-best winning streak to seven in-a-row and moves to 10-3-0 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-5-0.

The Huskies move to 40-26-4 all-time against the Bulldogs in a series that dates back to 1935. Additionally, Connecticut has outscored its opponents, 16-to-2, over its current seven-match winning streak. Defensively, UConn has posted five-straight shutouts.

Connecticut jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the 28th minute when Abdou Mbacke Thiam (Dakar, Senegal) found the back of the net for the team-leading ninth time, taking a pass from Alex Sanchez (Corona, Calif.) and Niko Petridis (Norwalk,Conn.) before finishing into the bottom left of the cage.

Redshirt-junior keeper Scott Levene (Stamford, Conn.) registered his seventh clean sheet of the 2016 season, making one save.

In the 15th minute, Thiam tracked down a loose ball in the attacking third and attempted a left-footed shot that was blocked by a Yale centerback. Two minutes later, Levene turned away a tough shot by Yale’s Lucas Kirby before pouncing on the loose ball to thwart the danger.


 

 

Four minutes into the second half, Husky centerback Simen Olafsen fired a 30-yard attempt toward frame that curled wide right of the cage. Senior tri-captain Kwame Awuah (Toronto, Ont.), who was named league Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, had a chance in the 67th minute, firing a 18-yard attempt from the box of the box that was blocked.

The Huskies outshot the Bulldogs, 10-to-3, over the 90-minute match and also held a 4-to-0 advantage in corner kick chances.

The Huskies return to American Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 15 when they host USF at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium at 7 p.m. A full match preview will be available on uconnhuskies.com on Thursday morning.
