STORRS, Conn. - Behind two goals and an assist from Mamadou Doudou Diouf, the University of Connecticut men's soccer team downed Seton Hall, 4-0, at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium on Wednesday night. Connecticut improved to 12-1-1 (4-1 BIG EAST). The Huskies extended their home unbeaten streak to 34 games dating back to September 7, 2009. Seton Hall dropped to 6-8 (2-3 BIG EAST)
Tonight's game was a rematch of a 1-0 defeat for the Huskies at Seton Hall in the 2011 regular season finale that knocked UConn from a bye in the BIG EAST Tournament.
"Coach brought it up all week," said Connecticut senior captain Carlos Alvarez. "But at the end of the day, it's a new season and a new team. We wanted to come out after a week off and play well. We did that tonight."
Stephane Diop scored the game-winning goal 17:53 into the contest, Diouf put home his 10th and 11th goals of the year in the 21st and 62nd minutes, and senior left back Flo Liu added his second of the year at 48:22.
"Obviously scoring is a great feeling, I love getting forward," said Liu. "My job is to provide an outlet for the offense. Our outside backs want to be part of the attack and it helps us to keep the pressure on the other team."
In the third minute, Alvarez missed a sliding opportunity from inside the six to go ahead 1-0. Diouf took a pass over the top of the defense on the right side and slid the ball across the six-yard box. Alvarez was fully extended and poked the ball just wide of the left post.
Connecticut earned a free kick in the seventh minute with a foul committed on Diouf at the top-left corner of the box. Max Wasserman drove it straight on, forcing Seton Hall keeper Kevin Bonder into a nice save, tipping the ball over the crossbar for a corner.
The Huskies put home two goals in a three minute stretch, beginning with Stephane Diop's second of the year at 17:53. Diop took a pass from Colin Bradley on the left side of the box and beat Bonder between the legs.
Mamadou Doudou Diouf made it 2-0 at 20:16 with a crisp header from six yards out. Diouf took a hard foul away from the ball a minute earlier and responded with his 10th tally of the season. Stephane Diop sent in the cross from the left side of the box for his third assist of the year.
Seton Hall generated eight shots in the half, but put just two on net. Most of the Seton Hall attempts came from outside 25 yards. The two teams went into the locker room tied in shots, 8-8, with Seton Hall holding a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
UConn pressured right out of the locker room and had a shot from Diouf go just wide of the left post after a turnover by the Seton Hall defense in the 46th minute.
Senior back Flo Liu made it 3-0 with an excellent give-and-go with Diouf on the left side of the box. Liu charged into the box and fired a one-time shot into the lower right corner. The goal was Liu's second of the season with Diouf earning his second assist of 2012.
Diouf added his second of the night at 61:12 with another well-executed set of passing, beginning with a cross from Liu at the left side over the back line right to Carlos Alvarez. Alvarez collected in the box and laid a pass back to Diouf, who blasted his shot past the helpless SHU keeper from 10 yards out.
The Huskies will hit the road to face Pittsburgh on Saturday, October 20 at 7 p.m. That game can be heard live at WHUS.org, 91.7fm.
