FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Former UConn men’s soccer standout Jossimar Sanchez has reached an agreement with the New England Revolution of the MLS, as announced by the organization Wednesday.
Sanchez appeared in 74 games for the Huskies from 2009-2012, making 73 starts as a center midfielder and center back and finishing his collegiate career with three goals and one assist. The Paterson, N.J. native was a team captain his junior and senior year for the Huskies, who reached the NCAA Quarterfinals in each season during that time. He helped UConn win the Big East regular season title and earned All-Big East First Team Honors as a senior after finishing the year with one goal, which came against conference rival Marquette, and two assists.
The former Husky was drafted No. 4 by the Revolution in the MLS Supplemental Draft in 2013 despite a leg injury that occurred during his goal against Marquette, which caused him to miss the rest of his senior year. As a junior, he was named to the All-Big East Third Team and to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week after leading Connecticut to back-to-back shutouts over Tulsa and SMU.
Sanchez once again earned All-Big East Third Team honors his sophomore season when he tallied four points on two goals, and he was named to the All-Big East Rookie Team as a freshman, helping the Huskies win another Big East regular season title.
“Jossimar personifies what a UConn soccer play is about: passion, determination, competitive spirit and great feet,” UConn men’s soccer coach Ray Reid said. “Jay Heaps and Michael Burns are going to be very happy over time with this signing.”
The UConn defender has played in four of the first five preseason games for the Revolution this season, playing as an outside back.
“Jossimar is a young player who will provide us depth,” Revolution general manager Michael Burns said. “He worked hard to return to full fitness after his injury in college, so we’re pleased he’s earned a spot on our roster this year.”
The Revolution open regular season play March 8th when they go on the road to face the Houston Dynamo.
