STORRS, Conn. – Five former standouts with the UConn men’s soccer program – Kwame Awuah, Andre Blake, Cyle Larin, Scott Levene and Jake Nerwinski - continue finding success at the professional level in the realms of Major League Soccer and the Turkish Süper Lig.

In program history, UConn has had 33 players reach the MLS ranks and 36 selections in the MLS SuperDraft. The current group of “Huskies in the Pros” continue to carry the torch for UConn in professional play, including Scott Levene – the latest addition to the list.

Levene (Stamford, Conn.) was recently signed by the New York Red Bulls II of the United Soccer League on March 23, after coming off a season where he was selected All-American Athletic Conference Second Team for his play at goalkeeper. He joins Blake as the current pair of former UConn goalkeepers to play professionally.

Back in January, Larin took his talents to Europe after being sold by Orlando City SC to Beşiktaş J.K. in Turkey. He spent three seasons in Orlando, playing in 87 matches (77 starts) and accounting for 43 goals. In 2015, he scored an MLS-rookie record 17 goals in just 24 matches.

Awuah (New York City FC), Blake (Philadelphia Union) and Nerwinski (Vancouver FC) are about two months into the MLS season, which stretches until October. All three played for their respective clubs last season, as well.

“Huskies in the Pros” Update:

Awuah (Toronto, ON) has appeared in two matches for NYC FC this season, as the team owns a 6-3-2 record and sits in third place in the Eastern Conference. NYC FC plays returns to action on Saturday against Colorado. The midfielder was selected 16th overall in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft.

Blake (May Pen, Jamaica) has started at goalkeeper in all 10 matches this season for Philadelphia, pitching three shutouts and making 33 saves along the way. The Union are 3-2-5, good for eighth place in the Eastern Conference. It is Blake’s fifth season with Philadelphia, after being chosen No. 1 overall in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. The Union play again on Saturday against Real Salt Lake.

Larin (Brampton, ON) has played in three games with Beşiktaş, earning his first start on Sunday in a 3-2 win over Osmanlispor. In his Beşiktaş debut on April 7, he scored a goal in a 5-1 win over Goztepe. The team returns to action on Saturday against Sivasspor.
