STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut men's soccer team looks forward to another promising season in 2011 after advancing to its 13th consecutive NCAA Tournament and 31st overall last fall. The Huskies' 18-match schedule in 2011 features 10 contests at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs.
The Huskies' 2011 journey will include facing nine opponents that participated in the 2010 NCAA College Cup, including five teams from the BIG EAST Conference. The Huskies' open the regular season with three consecutive match-ups at home, beginning with St. Francis on Saturday, Aug. 27. UConn will then play host to Michigan State on Sept. 1 and California on Sept. 4.
After its three-game home stand, UConn will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the Hurricane Classic featuring the Huskies, Oakland, SMU and host, Tulsa. UConn will take on Tulsa at 8:35 p.m. (EST) on Friday, Sept. 9 before facing SMU on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 12:30 p.m. (EST). Tulsa has made the NCAA Tournament seven times, including the last four seasons, while SMU advanced to the 2010 NCAA Elite Eight and won the Conference USA Regular Season title.
The Huskies follow with a return to New England as they head to Bean Town for a match-up with Boston University on Friday, Sept. 16 and Boston College on Tuesday, Sept. 20 before beginning conference play.
UConn opens BIG EAST Conference play at home on Sept. 24 against St. John's, a team in which they battled to a scoreless tie in 2010. The Huskies' BIG EAST home schedule is packed with exciting and competitive games, including contests against the Red Storm, Providence (Oct. 12), Pittsburgh (Oct. 15), Marquette (Oct. 26) and 2010 BIG EAST Blue Division Champion, Georgetown (Oct. 22).
The Huskies will face Yale at home in non-conference action on Sept. 27 and will play four BIG EAST Conference games on the road, beginning with an Oct. 1 match-up at Louisville. The Huskies will face conference rival Notre Dame on Saturday, Oct. 8 in South Bend, Ind. and will also take on West Virginia (Oct. 18) and Seton Hall (Oct. 29) in league contests on the road.
The Huskies' mid-week match against Marquette will serve as UConn's final regular-season home contest of the season before taking on Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J. to conclude 2011 regular-season play.
The 2011 BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship will begin with First Round games on Nov. 2 followed by quarterfinal match-ups on Nov. 5, both rounds will take place on campus sites. The semifinals of the championship as well as the final championship game will be played at the new state-of-the-art Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. on Nov. 11 and Nov. 13.
The winner of the championship receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship.
