PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After helping the No. 16 UConn men’s soccer team pick up a pair of wins in three days to start the 2016 season, standouts Abdou Mbacke Thiam (Dakar, Senegal) and Niko Petridis (Norwalk, Conn.) were honored by the American Athletic Conference on Monday. Thiam was tabbed as the league’s weekly Offensive Player of the Week, while Petridis picks up Rookie of the Week honors.
A 2015 American Athletic Conference All-Second Team member, Thiam picked up where he left off after a fantastic rookie season, scoring two goals during the Huskies’ opening weekend. The sophomore forward scored the first goal of the season just 57 seconds into Connecticut’s match vs. Iona and added a penalty score in the 65th minute on Sunday night in a 2-0 victory over Nebraska-Omaha.
Petridis picks up his first conference honor after earning a starting nod in each of the team’s two matches. After putting up a shot in the win over Iona, Petridis found the back of the net in the 85th minute against the Mavericks, sealing the 2-0 victory for UConn.
In addition to the pair of weekly award winners, redshirt-junior keeper Scott Levene (Stamford, Conn.) and sophomore centerback Simen Olafsen (Oppegaard, Norway) were tabbed as honor roll selections after helping the Husky defense post a shutout on Sunday night.
The 2-0-0 Huskies resume non-conference play on Friday, Sept. 2 when they welcome Louisville to the Storrs campus for a 7:30 p.m. tilt at Morrone Stadium.
