Huskies Down Villanova in Double Overtime

Villanova, PA (Sunday, Sept. 9)— Despite having numerous opportunities and dominating throughout the duration of the game, the University of Connecticut men’s soccer team was taken to double overtime by Villanova Sunday afternoon before coming away with a 2-1 victory. With the win, the Huskies’ record improved to 3-1-1, 1-0-0 in the conference, while the Wildcats fell to 0-3 on the season, and winless in the conference.

With 7:18 left on the clock, junior Michael Mordocco (Dix Hills, NY) sent a crossing pass into the box to senior David Castellanos (Philadelphia, PA) who slotted the winning tally to the lower right of Villanova goalkeeper Sean Teesdale.

Villanova got on the board first when communication broke down between the back half of the UConn field and Jonathan Lopuski slid the ball into the net off an assist from Joe Caruolo at the 13:26 mark. Sam Forko (Sr., Houston, TX) fed the ball up to sophomore Cesar Cuellar (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) who received it at the top of the box and sent it in over the reach of the goalie, for UConn’s game-tying goal.

On the day, UConn’s Bryheem Hancock (Sr., Middletown, DE) came up with a pair of saves, while Teesdale stopped eight.

The Huskies return home for a September 15th match against fourth-ranked St. John’s at Morrone Stadium in Storrs, CT, with start time set for 7 p.m. As it stands, the series is even at seven a piece with a pair of ties. In the last meeting (September 30, 2000) the two battled to a scoreless tie.
