PROVIDENCE – After scoring twice in a span of 2:19 to lead the Huskies to a 2-1 win over UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, UConn men’s soccer freshman forward Abdou Mbacke Thiam was selected as the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday morning. Additionally, Husky keeper Scott Levene earned a spot on the conference’s weekly honor roll.
Thiam registered the first four points of his career in the win on Sunday, helping the Huskies extend their unbeaten streak to 12-straight. After UCSB took a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick in the 58th minute, Thiam knotted the game at 83:34 when he collected a loose ball in the middle of the box on a corner kick and tapped it over the goal line for his first career point. Junior captain Kwame Awuah was credited with the assist after sending in the corner kick.
Less than three minutes later, Awuah took the ball down the left flank and laid in a ball to Thiam at the top of the box. The freshman collected the pass in stride and fired a shot into the back of the net to put the Huskies up 2-1.
The Huskies have now earned two-straight Rookie of the Week accolades after defender Simen Olafsen earned the honor on Sept. 7.
Levene earns honors from the conference for the third-straight week after picking up his first two wins of the season against Harvard and UCSB. This season, the redshirt-sophomore boasts a stellar 0.35 GAA and an .800 save percentage in the net. During the team’s 12-match unbeaten streak, Levene has allowed just three goals and has posted eight clean sheets.
The Huskies return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 19 when they play host to URI at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
