STORRS, Conn. – Senior midfielder Cheikh Stephane Coly and junior captain Abdou Mbacke Thiam, two members of the UConn men’s soccer team, were both featured in a SportsCenter Africa segment on Thursday afternoon.
Coly and Thiam, natives of Dakar, Senegal, sat down with an ESPN crew for a preseason interview to talk about their experiences at UConn since coming to the United States. The feature story can be viewed above.
Thiam has dominated since arriving to Storrs, being named to the American Athletic Conference All-Second Team and All-Rookie Team as a freshman in 2015. As a sophomore, he was selected to the All-Conference First Team and has led the Huskies in scoring in each of his first two seasons.
UConn’s most dominant scoring threat has a team-high six goals this season, including four game-winners, to lead the offensive attack. Most recently, his goal in the 82nd minute against Providence lifted the Huskies to a 1-0 victory on Tuesday.
Coly has been a major contributor since his freshman season in 2014, when he was named American Rookie of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Conference Rookie Team. He started in each of UConn’s 41 games as a sophomore and junior.
The Huskies return to action on Friday night when Tulsa visits Joseph J. Morrone Stadium for a 7:05 p.m. (ET) kickoff on the American Digital Network.
