PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Connecticut defender Sergio Campbell earned his first American Athletic Conference weekly honor this season as announced by the conference Monday afternoon.
Campbell was named the conference Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Huskies record a shutout against Memphis in UConn’s 2-0 win on Saturday. The Tigers, who came into the match averaging over 13 shots a game, struggled against the UConn defense, putting zero shots on goal and taking just two shots the entire match.
The junior has been a key piece to a Connecticut defense that has been brilliant all season. The Huskies have allowed just 6.1 shots a game this year, giving up 22 shots on goal throughout the season. He has started every game for UConn, who has five shutouts on the year.
Connecticut returns to action tomorrow night when it hosts Columbia at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
