PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After scoring in the Huskies’ 2-1 win over UCF on Saturday, UConn’s men’s soccer freshman forward Abdou Mbacke Thiam was selected as the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday.
Thiam gave Connecticut a 1-0 lead in the opening half against the Knights, tallying his team-leading fourth score of the season at the 42:37 mark. The freshman has earned a starting assignment in all 13 of the Huskies’ contests in 2015 and leads the squad in goals (4), points (8), and game-winning goals (1).
In the league, Thiam checks in at No. 10 with four total scores and also ranks 10th with a 0.31 goals/gm average.
The weekly honor is the second for Thiam, who was also tabbed as the Rookie of the Week on Sept. 14 after scoring twice in a span of 2:19 to lift UConn to a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over UC Santa Barbara.
Next up, Thiam and the Huskies head out on a two-game road trip against Temple and Tulsa. Kickoff against the Owls is set for Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m.
