PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Connecticut midfielders Cyle Larin and George Fochive both earned American Athletic Conference weekly honors as announced by the conference Monday afternoon.
Larin, who leads UConn with six goals this season, was named the Rookie of the Week, while Fochive was named the conference Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Huskies get a draw against No. 7 Louisville Saturday and extend their unbeaten streak to eight matches.
Monday marked the second time Larin was named Rookie of the Week this season. The freshman recorded his sixth goal against Louisville on Saturday, and has scored a goal in each of Connecticut's last three matches.
Fochive, who has been named to the Honor Roll three times this season, won the Defensive Player of the Week award for the first time this year. He has been vital to a Connecticut defense that hadn't allowed a goal in over 355 minutes of play before conceding a goal to the Cardinals in the first half.
Forward Allando Matheson was also recognized this week, as he was named to the conference Honor Roll. The junior has been on an offensive tear lately, scoring five goals in his last five matches. He's netted at least two scores in two of the last three matches, and has provided a spark off the bench for a Connecticut offense that has averaged three goals a match in its last four contests.
The Huskies return to the field tomorrow when they go on the road to face Yale at Reese Stadium in New Haven. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
