PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Connecticut freshman midfielder Cyle Larin earned American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honors for the third straight week, as announced by the conference Monday afternoon.
Larin, who has been named the Rookie of the Week four times this year, led the Huskies in goals during the regular season, netting eight scores in 16 games for the Huskies. On Saturday, the Brampton, Ontario native scored his fourth game-winning goal on the year less than three minutes into Connecticut’s 1-0 regular season finale win against SMU.
UConn (9-2-5 overall, 4-0-4 conference) is unbeaten in its last 11 matches, benefiting from a consistent dose of scoring from Larin. The freshman has put away at least one goal in five of his last six matches, and has recorded a point in all six of his previous games.
Larin’s eight goals this season are good for the second most among conference players, trailing only Central Florida’s Romario Williams, who has tallied nine scores. Larin is third in the conference with 18 points this year, and his four shots a game are tied with Memphis's Mark Sherrod for the highest average in the American this season.
Connecticut finished second in the conference standings this season, and will host SMU in the American Athletic Conference quarterfinals this Saturday at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m., and students can pick up a free ticket to the match with a valid student ID at the Goal Patrol meeting, which will be held at the Gampel Pavilion East entrance at 4 p.m. on November 9. Tickets may also be purchased by calling 1-877-AT-UCONN.
