TAMPA, Fla. – After securing a spot in The American Championship with a draw against SMU on Saturday, the Huskies prepare for a semifinal matchup against the second-seeded Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Friday, Nov. 11 at 4:30 p.m. Tune in on The American Digital Network or on WHUS.org, 91.7 FM.
UConn (11-6-1, 3-3-0) traveled to Tulsa earlier this season on Oct. 1 pulling out a 1-0 triumph. Andrew Geres (Portland, Conn.) scored the only goal of the match, though Tulsa nearly evened the game late with a successful penalty kick. However, the goal was waved off because a Tulsa player was offside. Scott Levene (Stamford, Conn.) saved the second attempt and the Huskies held on for the victory.
The Huskies are 5-0-3 all-time in the American Athletic Conference tournament. UConn has advanced to the championship match in each of the three seasons that they have been a member of the conference.
On Wednesday the Huskies received All-Conference honors, as well as, being recognized as the Team Fair Play Award winner, given to the team that accumulates the least amount of points in conference play. The points are compiled of fouls (one point), yellow cards (five) and red cards (10). The Huskies amassed 108 points.
Senior co-captains Kwame Awuah (Toronto, Ont.), Jake Nerwinski (Lawrenceville, N.J.) along with sophomore forward Abdou Mbacke Thiam secured spots on the All-Conference First Team. Simen Olafsen was named to the second team. Freshmen Munir Saleh and Niko Petridis earned All-Rookie team nods.
