Men’s Soccer to Host Marist College in NCAA First Round

STORRS, Conn. (Nov. 15) – The 2004 BIG EAST Champion University of Connecticut men’s soccer team will face Marist College in the first round of the NCAA College Cup Tournament, the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Selection Committee announced on Monday afternoon. The match will be played at Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn. on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 12:00 p.m.

The Huskies will be making their 25th overall tournament appearance and their seventh consecutive berth. In 2003, the UConn fell in the NCAA Tournament second round to St. John’s as the Red Storm advanced on penalty kicks (4-2) after the teams played to a 0-0 tie. Connecticut has won three National Championships, most recently in 2000.

UConn’s record currently stands at 11-7-3 overall, and the team completed its BIG EAST schedule with a 5-4-1 record. The Huskies qualified for their 10th consecutive conference tournament appearance, 20th overall, dating back to 1982 and won their fifth BIG EAST Tournament title. Connecticut has made the most BIG EAST Tournament appearances, with Seton Hall close behind with 18 berths. The Huskies missed only three BIG EAST Tournaments, from 1992-1994.

Marist holds an 11-7-0 record and will make its first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history after capturing the MAAC Championship with a 2-0 win over Rider in the final. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Red Foxes and the Huskies and the winner of the match will move on to face No. 15 seed Boston College in Newton, Mass. on Nov. 23.
