UConn Goalkeeper Andre Blake Named As MAC Hermann Semifinalist

UConn junior goalkeeper Andre Blake recorded 10 shutouts this season.

Dec. 9, 2013

STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut junior goalkeeper Andre Blake has been named as a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, as announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Blake, who was named the American Athletic Goalkeeper of the Year in November, is one of 15 men's semifinalists for the trophy, which is given out each season to the best college soccer player. College coaches who are part of the NSCAA and fans have until tomorrow, Dec. 10 to cast their votes. Fans can vote HERE, and the finalists will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 12. There will be three men's finalists, with the announcement of the winner happening at a banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in Saint Louis on Friday, Jan. 10, 2014.

Blake was the only keeper named as a semifinalist this season and he joins a list that includes last year's winner, Maryland forward Patrick Mullen, and George Neumann, who was a semifinalist for the award in 2012.

The May Pen, Jamaica native has been a force between the posts ever since arriving in Storrs back in 2011. His 46 wins are good for the fourth most in program history, and his 36 career shutouts are the third most ever by a Connecticut goalkeeper. He has been named the conference Goalkeeper of the Year in each of his first three seasons, and as a sophomore he earned NSCAA First Team All-American honors and was named the New England Soccer News Player of the Year.

"He's the best college goalkeeper in the country," UConn head coach Ray Reid said. "He's done so well here and he is very deserving of this recognition."

This season, Blake allowed just 17 goals in 21 matches, boasting a 0.75 goals against average. He recorded 10 shutouts this year, and played admirably in UConn's 2-1 loss to UVA in the NCAA Quarterfinals last Friday, coming up with seven saves.
