SAN JUAN, P.R. - The University of Connecticut men's and women's swimming teams competed in the 2012 Copq Coqui Swim Meet in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Thursday finishing third in the ten team event. The competition is part of the team's winter training trip.
The Huskies scored 50 points and while Southern Illinois won the event with 90 while Notre Dame had 78. UConn finished ahead of South Dakota (22), Army (17), Bryant (14), Illinois State (13), Turabo (7), Natacion Encantada (3) and Caparra (2). Separately, the women were second as a team while the men were third.
Senior Caitlin Gallagher (Lawrence, Kansas) won the 200-meter IM in 2:30.34 and was second in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:17.89. Sophomore Kati Kyle (Lithia, Fla.) was second in the 100-meter backstroke in 1:10.78. Freshman Chineye Pigot (Miami, Fla.) was second in the 100-meter freestyle in 1:02.00.
On the men's side, sophomore Keith Piper (Naperville, Ill.) was third in the 100-meter backstroke in 1:01.74 and junior Karim Zayed (Montreal, Que.) was second in the 100-meter freestyle in 54.45 seconds.
The UConn men's and women's 200-meter medley relay teams both finished second with the men in 1:50.44 and the women in 2:07.06. All events at the meet were long course meters.
The Husky men's and women's swimming diving teams resume their schedule on Saturday, Jan. 21, when they play host to Seton Hall at 1:00 p.m.
