    Swimming Day 1 Finals Get Acrobat Reader

    PITTSBURGH - The swimming portion of the BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships kicked off on Wednesday with the 800-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard medley relay finals. The UConn women's relays teams had outstanding nights as both broke school records as senior Kaitlin Gallagher (Lawrence, Kansas) was a member of both relays teams. On the men's side, sophomore Keith Piper (Naperville, Ill.) was on both relay teams.

    The Connecticut men are in fifth place with 78 points while the women's team is in third place with 108.

    West Virginia ran away with the women's 800 freestyle relay, smashing the BIG EAST Championship and Trees Pool records in the process with a time of 7:06.87. Connecticut finished in sixth in that event in a school-record time of 7:20.27.

    The Louisville men set records of their own in the 800 free relay, finishing in a time of 6:22.70, a new meet and pool record. The Huskies were fifth in that event in a time of 6:41.61.

    The night wrapped up with the 200-yard medley relay finals with Louisville capturing BIG EAST Championship titles for both the women and men. UConn was fourth in the women's in a school-record time of 1:41.85 and the men were fifth in 1:31:53.

    BIG EAST Championship swimming action continues Thursday with the 500-yard freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle relay. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. followed by the finals at 6 p.m.
