Men's And Women's Swimming Kick Off BIG EAST Championship

LOUISVILLE, Kent. - The University of Connecticut men's and women's swimming teams opened up competition at the BIG EAST Championship on Wednesday with good results in the four relays that were run. Including last weekend's diving competition, both the UConn men's and women's programs are in fifth place with the event running through Saturday.

In the women's 200-yard medley relays the Huskies finished in seventh place in a school record 1:43.78. Junior Caitlin Gallagher (Lawrence, Kansas) and junior Chelsea Petiz (Fenton, Mich.) both had strong legs in that event.

UConn finished in fifth place in the 800-yard freestyle relay, which was anchored by sophomore Jordan Bowen (Lake Elmo, Minn.), who had a 1:48.9, a career-split time.

The men's 800-yard freestyle relay finished fifth and had good splits from freshman Keith Piper and sophomore Jeremy Ramshaw (Mississauga, Ont.).

The BIG EAST Championship continues on Thursday with men's and women's events in the 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard IM and the 50-yard freestyle.
