Huskies Finish Fourth At BIG EAST Championship

INDIANAPOLIS - The University of Connecticut men's swimming and diving team concluded action at the BIG EAST Championship on Saturday. The Huskies finished fourth of nine teams as Notre Dame won the championship followed by Louisville and Pittsburgh while the Huskies topped Cincinnati, Georgetown, Seton Hall, Villanova and Providence.

UConn sophomore Sawyer Franz (Pine, Colo.) earned All-BIG EAST honors on Saturday by finishing third in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 1:45.78. Franz also earned All-BIG EAST with a second-place finish in the 400-yard IM on Friday. Franz placed ninth in the 1650-yard freestyle on Saturday in a time of 15:40.33.

Junior Sean Battle (Allison Park, Pa.) won the B final of the 100-yard freestyle in 44.82 seconds.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, sophomore Lachezar Shumkov (Sofia, Bulgaria) finished sixth in the final with a time of 1:59.6. Sophomore Wyatt Boliek (Greensville, S.C.) won the B final in that event with a time of 2:00.97.

Junior Anthony Cortright (Wallingford, Conn.) was seventh in the platform diving with a score of 217.90.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team finished in fourth place in a time of 2:58.77. That team was comprised of Battle, Piper, freshman Diguan Pigot (Miami, Fla.) and senior Kyungsoo Yoon (Toronto, Ont.)

The team returns to action at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships, which take place March 15-16 at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.
