Men's and Women's Swimming And Diving Both Top Boston College

STORRS, Conn. (October 19, 2008) - The University of Connecticut men's and women's swimming and diving teams both posted wins over Boston College on Sunday at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium. The men defeated Boston College by a 192.5-102.5 count while the women won 193-102 in the first dual meet action for both teams.

The women's team was led by freshman Caitlin Gallagher (Lawrence, Kansas), who won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.25 and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:22.90. Freshman Anna Drinka (San Antonio, Texas) won the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:07.27 and the 50 yard freestyle in 24.76. Freshman Erin DeVinney (Avondale, Ariz.) won the 1,000 yard freestyle in 10:33.35 and the 500 yard free in 5:08.78.

Senior Liza Marianni (Cherry Hill, N.J.) won both the one-meter (255.45) and three-meter (280.05) diving events.

The men's team saw sophomore Alex Davidson (Pointe-Clair, Que.) win the 100 yard backstroke (52.50) and 200 yard backstroke (1:55.69). Sophomore Tomasz Sobek (Siemianowice Slaskie, Poland) won the 100 yard breaststroke (58.23) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:06.41).

In the diving events, junior Stephen Ferreira (Madison, Conn.) won the one-meter (306.83) and finished second in the three-meters (290.33).

The teams hold their annual Alumni Meets next Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and return to competition on October 31 and November 1 when they travel to Rutgers to face the Scarlet Knights and Villanova. The men only take on Villanova over the two days.
