STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut mens's swimming and diving team opened its 2012-13 season with a pair of dual meet victories on Saturday. The Huskies topped Fordham by a 191-105 score and Bucknell by a 175-125 score.
Bucknell also beat Fordham, 179-120. UConn was led by senior Kyungsoo Yoon (Toronto, Ont.), who won four events - both medley relays, the 50-yard freestyle in 29.81 seconds and the 1000-yard freestyle in 47.04 seconds.
Sophomore Lachezar Shumkov (Sofia, Bulgaria) won the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard medley relays.
Junior Keith Piper (Naperville, Ill.) won the 100-yard backstroke and was part of the winning medley and freestyle relays teams.
In the diving events, UConn took the top two spots in botht he one-meter and three-meter events as freshman John Brice (Bala Cynwood, Pa.) finished first with 323.90 points in the three-meter and 284.20 in the one-meter. Anthony Cortright (Wallingford, Conn.) was second in both events with 294.80 in the three-meter and 255.80 in the one-meter. In his first collegiate meet, Brice qualifed for the NCAA Zone Championship at the end of the season.
UConn returns to action on Friday when it travels to Army for a 6:00 p.m. meet.
