STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut senior Caitlin Gallagher (Lawrence, Kansas) won three events Saturday as the UConn swimming teams kicked off the season with the Husky Invitational that also featured Providence, Fordham, Maine and the Vermont women. There was no team scoring in the event and no diving.
Gallagher's three wins came in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.31, the 200-yard IM in 2:07.77 and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:27.86.
UConn men's freshman Sawyer Franz (Pine, Colo.) started his career in fine form with wins in the 400-yard IM in 4:13.52 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:42.01. Freshman Lachezar Shumkov (Sofia, Bulgaria) was a double-winner in the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.97 seconds and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:10.33.
Sophomore Keith Piper (Naperville, Ill.) rounded out the double winners for UConn with victories in the 100-yard backstroke in 52.82 seconds and the 200-yard backstroke in 1:54.76.
The teams return to action next Friday and Saturday when UConn plays host to the BIG EAST Quad meet that also features Rutgers, Georgetown and Villanova. Friday's action starts at 4:00 p.m. while Saturday starts at 10:00 a.m.
