WEST POINT, N.Y. - The University of Connecticut women's swimming and diving team defeated Army on Saturday by a score of 182.5 to 109.5. The Army men defeated UConn by a 176.5 to 123.5 score.
For the men, freshman Lachezar Shumkov (Sofia, Bulgaria) continued his impressive start to his collegiate career with wins in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.84 seconds) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:06.21). Junior Karim Zayed (Montreal, Que.) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:41.33 and freshman Sawyer Franz (Pine, Colo.) won the 200-yard IM in 1:57.14.
The UConn women were led by three double winners in senior Caitlin Gallagher (Larwence, Kansas), junior Kim Fleming (Mississauga, Ont.) and junior Jordan Bowen (Lake Elmo, Minn.) Gallagher won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.75 and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:19.11 while Bowen won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.11 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:03.70. Fleming won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.18 seconds while she won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:19.11.
UConn won both diving events as junior Danielle Cecco (Hicksville, N.Y.) took the one-meter with 297.38 points and junior Nicole Borriello (Montgomery, N.Y.) won the three-meter with 282.71 points. Junior Mary deMarrais (Bernardsville, N.J.) won the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:32.80, senior Erin DeVinney (Avondale, Ariz.) won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:06.80 and freshman Chinyere Pigot (Miami, Fla.) won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.73 seconds.
The teams return to action next Sunday when they play host to Penn at noon at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium in Storrs.
