    FINALS RESULTS

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The University of Connecticut men’s and women’s swimming teams return to campus Sunday after spending two weeks in Puerto Rico to compete in the 10th annual Copa Coqui Invitational.

The Huskies were one of 12 NCAA schools to partake in the event along with several local colleges, as over 500 swimmers in total competed. UConn had several notable results, starting in the 200-meter medley relay as a pair of sophomores, Jeff Magin and Ryan Walsh, and juniors, Lachezar Shumkov and Felix Samuels teamed up to finish second in the event, swimming it in 1:49.57.

Magin also swam well in the 100-meter backstroke, earning third place honors with a time of 1:01.72, while Samuels completed the 100-meter freestyle in 54.04 to finish second.

On the women’s side, freshman standout Christine Pedersen scored a big victory in the 100-meter backstroke, finishing first with a time of 1:07.55.  Junior Chinyere Pigot also had a strong showing during the meet, taking home third place honors in the 50-meter freestyle after swimming it in 27.94.

Aside from the invitational, the Huskies also had a chance to train in long course pools with over 50 other schools.

“The team was able to make use of the outstanding training facilities San Juan has to offer,” UConn swimming coach Bob Goldberg said. “It provided us a unique opportunity for quality in-season training and an outstanding chance for team bonding and development.”

Both teams return to the pool Jan. 25th when they travel to Princeton to compete against the Tigers.
