Huskies Complete Regular Season with Husky Open

Michelle Faykes was a standout performer in the 1650-yard freestyle on Saturday

STORRS, Conn. – UConn swimming hosted its annual Husky Open to close out the regular season on Saturday at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium.

Saturday’s events consisted of a time trail format, allowing the participating teams a final opportunity to record times and prepare for the postseason. Boston College, Southern Connecticut State University and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy all took part in the Open.

One of the standout performances from Saturday’s meet for the Huskies was Michelle Faykes (Cherry Hill, N.J.) who has battled injuries throughout her career, swam the 1650-yard freestyle and finished with the top time, swimming in 17:33:06.

Senior co-captain James Donlevy registered a pair of strong performances in the 50-yard (26.97) and 200-yard freestyle (1:41.71). Senior Darrah Jampo had one of her best meets of the year, placing first in the 100-yard freestyle (53.31) and second in the 50-yard freestyle (24.94).

Freshman Brazil Rule had an outstanding day winning both the 100-yard IM (1:00.17) and the 50-yard butterfly (26.08). Holly Parker secured quality times in the 100-yard freestyle completing the race in 53.69 (second) and in the 200-yard breaststroke racing to a 2:28.52 (third) clip.

Shane Humphrey was superb in his butterfly events, notching first-place finishes in both the 50-yard (23.50) and 100-yard (51.70) events. He also raced in the 200-yard butterfly and ended up in third place.



The Huskies now prepare for the American Conference Championships on Feb. 15-18 in Houston, Texas. The men’s team finished fourth in The Championships, while the women’s squad captured sixth in the 2016 American Championships.
