    11 Huskies Advance to Finals

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Feb. 16) - University of Connecticut junior Ofri Brener (Haifa, Israel) set a new school record in the 100-yard men's breaststroke event, turning in a time of 56.14 seconds on the second day of the BIG EAST Conference Swimming and Diving Championships held Friday at the Nassau County Aquatics Center in Uniondale, N.Y.

In the morning preliminaries, Brener clocked in a third place time of 56.30 seconds (also a school record) to advance to the evening finals in the event. He would finish fourth in the final race in which his time also marked an NCAA consideration time cut. Former Husky swimmer and current Villanova assistant swimming coach Sean Tedesco previously held the varsity record (56.82).

Ten Huskies also joined Brener in the evening finals. On the men's side, junior Sean Raffile (Portsmouth, R.I.), sophomore Marshal Livingstone (Endwell, N.Y.) and freshman Dustin Rogers (West Allis, Wis.) finished in the top 16 of their events in the morning preliminaries. For the women, seniors Liz Klink (Mt. Arlington, N.J.), Rachel Schwartz (Middletown, N.J.), Karri Charpentier (Leominster, Mass.), Erin Moran (Cheshire, Conn.), sophomore Kate Larson (Sayville, N.Y.) and freshmen Taylor Ruby (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Amber Johnston (Enfield, Conn.) also advanced to the finals.

Larson was the highest Husky women's finisher of the day, placing sixth in the finals of the 100 breaststroke with a 1:05.04. Lifetime bests were made in the 200 freestyle finals by Rogers (1:39.69) and Livingstone (1:39.85) and by Raffile in the 400 Individual Medley finals (4:07.52).

On the second day of competition, another school record in a women's relay event was eclipsed at the meet. Charpentier, Schwartz, Klink and freshman Katie Jelus (Beavercreek, Ohio) combined in the 800 freestyle relay to place sixth with a time of 7:33.54. The previous record of 7:39.01 was set during the 1995-96 season.

The Connecticut men are currently eighth with 165 points, while the women are also eighth with 155 points. The Huskies conclude conference competition tomorrow evening in Long Island, N.Y.
