STORRS, Conn. - Christa Saunders has been named an assistant coach for the UConn men's and women's swimming and diving programs. Saunders comes to UConn after serving as a graduate assistant coach at Gardner-Webb University the past two seasons.
Saunders was involved in all facets of the Gardner-Webb program and helped lead the team to its highest Coastal Collegiate Sports Association finish in six years this past season - with a second-place finish for the men's team and a third for the women's.
"We are excited to welcome Christa to our coaching staff," said first-year head coach Chris Maiello. "I have known Christa for quite some time and always knew she would be a great person to help build a growing program. She comes to the Huskies with experience at strong Division I programs such as William & Mary and Gardner-Webb. Both programs are highly respected and have helped her become the vibrant, energetic and focused coach she is today. She will add value immediately to our program and we can't wait for her to get started."
"I am so excited to begin my time with the University of Connecticut and to work alongside such an incredible coach as Chris Maiello," said Saunders. "It is an honor to represent UConn athletics and I look forward to contributing to its already strong tradition of success. I could not be more grateful for this opportunity or more eager for the season to begin!"
Saunders is a 2015 graduate of William & Mary with a degree in kinesiology and health sciences with a minor in psychology. She was a member of the women's swimming and diving team for two seasons before a shoulder injury ended her career.
She then gained valuable experience as a student assistant coach for her final two years, as the Tribe won the 2015 Colonial Athletic Association men's championship and finished second in 2014. The women's team finished third in both 2014 and '15.
Saunders has also worked swimming camps at Gardner-Webb, Navy and North Carolina State.
