PHILADELPHIA – The University of Connecticut men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both open their regular season this week with meets on the road against Villanova (Oct. 24) and Fordham (Oct. 25). The meet against the Wildcats is slated for a 5 p.m. start, and the Huskies begin action against the Rams at 1 p.m.
The women’s team returned to competitive swimming last Saturday when it hosted Central Connecticut, Rhode Island and Yale in a quad meet. Four UConn swimmers tallied first-place finishes in the scrimmage, including senior captain Katy Munzenmaier (Lake George, N.Y.), who won the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.31) and finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.26.
The Connecticut men’s swimming and diving team enters competition this week following a highly productive season in the team’s first year in the American Athletic Conference. The Huskies finished with a perfect 6-0 dual meet record last season and saw 10 swimmers earn All-American Athletic honors at the conference meet in February. Sophomore Chris Girg (Burbach, Germany) and senior Sawyer Franz (Pine, Colo.) both won individual finals at the event, as Girg topped all swimmers in the 500-yard freestyle with a school record time of 4:19.24, while Franz placed first in the 400-yard IM (3:47.88).
Friday’s meet will be the second straight year the Huskies face Villanova. UConn hosted the Wildcats last fall at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium, where both the Connecticut women’s team and men’s team notched victories, and two years ago the Huskies swept Fordham in their regular season openers.
