PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The American Athletic Conference honored UConn senior co-captain James Donlevy and junior diver Dan Kinney with its weekly honors this afternoon. Donlevy claimed Male Swimmer of the Week and Kinney earned Male Diver of the Week.
Kinney (Middletown, Conn.) had a fabulous meet on Saturday against Boston University and Yale, winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Kinney was impressive, scoring career-bests with a 330.05 in the 1-meter and 342.20 mark in the 3-meter. The junior has qualified for the NCAA Diving Zones in March.
“Dan has a tremendous amount of potential, and in the pursuit to maximize that well of talent, he often gets ahead of himself, said head diving coach John Bransfield. “Learning to stay within himself from day-to-day to be more consistent is his task at hand. But when he is on a few things, he can do impressive stuff. On Saturday, he connected more of the dots, strung more moves together on some dives, and was nothing short of exceptional. This is particularly encouraging in light of it still being mid-year!”
Donlevy (Lake Grove, N.Y.) won the 50-yard freestyle on Saturday, finishing in 20.92 and nearly locked down a victory in the 100-yard free but was beaten by .02 in the event. Donlevy also contributed in the 200-yard medley relay, helping the team win the competition.
“James winning the 200 Medley Relay and coming back to win the 50 free were important to that meet. He is becoming a great team captain,” said head coach Bob Goldberg.
The Huskies are in the midst of winter break portion of its schedule and will return to competion on Jan. 5 in Puerto Rico for the Copa Coqui.
