UConn Nabs First Spring Win, 6-1 Over Siena

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – The UConn men’s tennis team picked-up their first dual match of the spring season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Siena College 6-1 at the East Hartford Tennis Club.  The Huskies improved to 3-2 on the season with the win.

“I’m super excited the guys picked up a win against a solid Siena team,’ stated associate head coach Reinaldo Valor.  “We have been pressing a bit the first couple matches but today everyone settled down and played solid tennis. I know the guys will have great week of practice as we get ready to take on two NCAA Tournament teams from last season in Army & Buffalo next.”

UConn got the day started off right by taking the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.  The senior-freshman team of Jonathan Edwards (Isle of Palms, S.C.) and Yili Zheng (Shanghai, China) opened with a 6-1 win over Peter Galante and Geovanny Mendoza at No. 2.

UConn junior duo of Hank Hill (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and Jack McLister (Leesburg, Va.) clinched the opening point with a 6-2 win at No.3 over Muhamma Raza-Sawani and Cameron Kirkwood.  The duo has played to an 11-6 record this season.

In singles action, Edward got the Huskies started by winning at No. 5 over Ale Giannakitisidis, 6-3 and 6-1, posting his ninth win this season while improving to 7-2 over his last nine.  McLister extended the UConn lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 over Kirkwood, notching his team-leading 10th singles win this season.  McLister is 7-3 in his last 10 matches.



UConn’s Hill clinched the match at No. 2, beating Mendoza 6-4 and 6-3. Zheng was a winner at the No.1 spot over Guille Lopez-Torres, 7-6 (4) and 6-3, matching McLister’s 10 singles wins this season.  He is 8-2 over his last 10.

Sophomore Evan Powell (Guilford, Conn.) closed out the UConn win by beating Alessandro Saglia, 6-3 and 6-3 at No. 6.

The Huskies will hit the road and play a pair of matches next weekend at Army West Point.  UConn faces the Black Knights on Friday, February 9 and Buffalo on Saturday, February 10.
