Feb. 7, 2014

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The UConn men's tennis team opened the 2014 spring season on Friday afternoon falling to Stony Brook, 6-1, in a dual match played at the United States Military Academy at West Point.  The Huskies will close out their opening weekend when they take on the Army Black Knights on Saturday.

"Stony Brook got the best of us today," stated head coach Michael Louis.  "I thought we played and competed well. We just need to continue to put ourselves in a position to compete and win these close sets. If we keep fighting we will start to learn to embrace those crucial moments."

UConn junior Wayner Harrell (East Windsor, Conn.) earned the lone singles win for the Huskies, knocking off Alexandre Felisa in the #1 position, 6-2 and 6-4.  It was Harrell's 10th singles win on the season as he improves to 10-5 overall on the year.

Harrell teamed with senior Ryan Carr (Madison, Conn.) at #1 doubles to win their 12th match as a doubles team this season.  The duo dispatched the team of Marcelo Locatelli and Jose Morales, 6-3, for the lone doubles victory of the day.

"Wayne Harrell played very tough for us today. He's really been working hard and it's starting to pay off. Ryan and he played a great doubles match that they should proud of."

Carr lost a tough three-set singles battle to Tyler Hoffman, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at #4 singles.  Freshman Christopher Toner (South Hamilton, Mass.) also lost a three-setter, falling at #3 to Jose Morales, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
