WEST POINT, N.Y. - The UConn men's tennis team fell to Stony Brook 7-0 on its first day of competition of the 2011 spring season on Saturday.
With the loss, UConn moves to 1-1 on the year after edging Army 4-3 this weekend as well.
Andrew Marcus and teammate Scott Warden won the No. 1 doubles by defeating Stony Brook's Nikita Fomin and Roope Kailaheimo 8-4. Stony Brook took the final two doubles' matches by defeated Dave Adams and Jai Yoon 8-5 and UConn's Ricardo Cardona and Wei Lin 8-3.
Stony Brook swept the singles' matches as Marcus fell in No. 1 singles by a score of 6-3, 6-1 to Fomin. Kailaheimo edged Warden in a competitive match as Warden won the first set 6-4 but lost the final two by scores of 6-4, 10-2.
Yoon, Adams and Lin as well as freshman Ryan Carr all lost their respective singles matches. Yoon dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Stony Brook's Ivan Rummel in No. 3 singles before Adams fell to Mitch Wong 6-3, 6-2 in No. 4 singles. Rounding out play, Stony Brook's Ryan Schmitz defeated Carr 7-6 (2), 6-1, while Lin lost to Francesco Ariciuli in a close 7-4, 6-4 match-up.
UConn returns to action on March 7 as the Huskies head to Puerto Rico for their spring break trip. The Huskies will take on Bryant University on March 7 with the match time still to be determined.
