BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The University of Connecticut men's tennis team started the spring season off with a pair of wins at Lehigh on Saturday. The Huskies earned a 5-2 win over the host Mountain Hawks and claimed a 6-1 decision against Mount St. Mary's.
Lehigh claimed the first point of the match with wins at first and third doubles. Andrew Marcus (Potomac, Md.) and Scott Warden (Boardman, Ohio) denied the Mountain Hawks the doubles sweep. Marcus and Warden won their battle at No. 3 doubles, 8-6 over Cameron Silbert and Arnaldo Pacheco.
UConn won five of six flights in singles play, winning No. 2 through No. 6. Marcus and Warden each collected their second victories of the day at second and fourth singles, respectively.
Joey Michaels (Rochester Mills, Mich.) won a three-set battle over Leland Richardson at No. 3. Tom Cook (Pittsford, N.Y.) also earned the win in a three-set battle, this time at No. 6 with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 victory.
At No. 5 singles, Dave Adams (Andover, Mass.) defeated Lehigh's Chris Collins, 6-2, 6-4.
Following their 5-2 victory over the hosts, the Huskies earned their second win of the day 6-1 against Mount St. Mary's. Connecticut swept the doubles portion of the match with each doubles match counting as one point in a modified format due to court constraints. Adams and Cook stepping up to the No. 2 spot and winning 9-8 (7-2). Michaels paired with Warden for a 8-1 victory in third doubles. Goldstein and Schueler collected their first win of the day at No. 1 doubles.
Goldstein collected his first singles win of the spring with a two-set decision at No. 1. In second singles, Marcus earned his second victory from that spot with a 6-2, 6-0 win. Ricardo Cardona (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) saw his first action of the season at No. 4 singles. He won a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 decision over the Mounts' Thad Mostowtt.
"This was a tremendous start to the season with our guys winning against a very strong Patriot League team in Lehigh," head coach Glenn Marshall said. "We played extremely well and started the season on a positive note."
The Huskies continue the season in West Point, N.Y. with matches against Army on Feb. 20 and vs. Stonybrook on Saturday, Feb. 21.
