STORRS, Conn. - In its first match of the spring season at home, the University of Connecticut men's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss at the hands of the UMBC Retrievers on Saturday. Junior Andrew Marcus (Potomac, Md.) won his singles match from No. 1, continuing the Huskies' early success. UConn won the doubles point with wins at second and third doubles at the East Hartford Racquet Club.
Marcus and Scott Warden (Boardman, Ohio) faltered to start things off in first doubles before Jai Yoon (Bayside, N.Y.) and Dave Adams (Andover, Mass.) won an 9-8 (3) decision from No. 2. Yoon and Adam’s victory from the second doubles spot secured the doubles point for Connecticut. Seniors Tom Cook (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Joe Goldstein (Tucson, Ariz.) combined for a win in a challenging doubles match at third to get things started.
Marcus defeated Chris Meyer in a 7-6 (5), 7-5 two-set decision at first singles. The Retrievers bounced back from the early deficit to win the remainder of the singles match on the day. UMBC's Mwalimu Phiri came out the victor in a three-set battle against Adams at No.5. Adams won the second set 6-4 to force the decisive third set.
"This was a hard fought match against a very strong team," head coach Glenn Marshall said. "Minus the result of a team victory, I couldn't be happier with the fight and effort our entire team showed."
The Huskies (0-3) continue the season south in Florida with the team's annual Spring Break Trip. UConn will take on Lake Forest on Sunday, March 7 at 9 a.m. in Orlando, Fla.
