ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Connecticut men's tennis team secured its first victory of the spring with a 7-0 victory over Lake Forest on Sunday. Three different players shutout their respective opponents in at least one set of the overall shutout win.
"It was nice to get our first win of the spring season," head coach Glenn Marshall said. "I hope we carry this momentum into our match with Valparaiso on Monday."
A sweep of doubles play provided the Huskies with a well deserved lead heading into singles action against the Lakers. Sophomore Scott Warden (Boardman, Ohio) and junior Andrew Marcus (Potomac, Md.) defeated Jon Flaksman and Elliot Muth 8-2 in first doubles. It was the greatest margin of victory for Connecticut in doubles.
Dave Adams (Andover, Mass.) along with Jai Yoon (Bayside, N.Y.) won an 8-4 decision from the second spot while seniors Joe Goldstein (Tucson, Ariz.) and Tom Cook (Pittsford, N.Y.) were victorious by an 8-3 margin at No. 3.
Those six continued their dominant performance in singles including Marcus, Adams, Yoon and Cook all shutting out the opposition entirely in one set. Marcus shutout Flaksman in the first set and secured the victory with a 6-1 decision in the second.
Adams followed suit, denying Chris Paterakos a point in the first set, winning the final 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Cook defeated Nick Cantor 6-2 in the first set before earning a 6-0 decision in the final.
Yoon recovered from a well contested 7-6 victory in the first set over Muth to win the second decisively, 6-0.
On the road in sunny Florida, the Huskies continue the spring break trip against Valparaiso on Monday.
