STORRS, Conn. - Joe Goldstein (Tucson, Ariz.) won his match at No. 1 singles to deny St. John's a sweep in men's tennis action on Saturday at the University of Connecticut Tennis Courts. The Huskies fell in their second-consecutive BIG EAST match of the weekend, 6-1 to the Red Storm.
"This was a tough match against a very solid team," head coach Glenn Marshall said. "The final match score does not reflect how close a match this really was."
St. John's took two of three doubles matches to lead by one going into singles play. The Connecticut duo of Scott Warden (Boardman, Ohio) and Andrew Marcus (Potomac, Md.) won 8-7 from the No. 2 spot forbidding the Red Storm to sweep doubles play.
Warden later fell in a battle at No. 4 singles, losing a challenging three-set match to Stefan Niholic. It was the lone three-set match of the day. Marcus lost his match in two sets at second singles by identical 7-6 scores.
Dave Adams (Andover, Mass.) also lost by the same margin in his two-set loss at No. 5 singles. Adams dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Jordan Talbot.
Goldstein won his No. 1 singles match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 for UConn's point against St. John's.
The Huskies (6-4) break from BIG EAST action and return to the road with a 3:30 p.m. at Marist on Thursday.
