STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's tennis team played their first outdoor match of the spring season on Thursday and came away with a 4-3 win over Wagner College at the University of Connecticut Tennis Courts. The Huskies ended a 17-match losiing skid and earned their first dual match victory of the spring.
The Huskies took won the first doubles match as Hank Hill (Ponte Verde Beach, Fla.) and Justin Warren (Durham, N.C.) grabbed a 6-2 win over Allen Wong and John Andersson. The Seahawks answered and swept the final to matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
UConn took four of the six singles matches as Hill and Warren both took home victories to finish the day as double winners on the afternoon. Hill pulled the match even opening singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jeremy Nuss at the #6 position.
Junior Arnaud Valentin (Ridgefield, Conn.) followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win at #5 over Wong to put the Huskies up 2-1. Warren made it 3-1 UConn with a win at the #3 spot, beating Eric Poland 6-4 and 7-5. Warren has won four of his last six matches for the Huskies.
The Huskies clinched the match at the top-spot as r-senior Jacob Spreyer (Denver, Colo.) earned a three-set victory. Spreyer lost the opening set 6-4 to Dale Sandy but rebounded with a 6-3 and 6-4 win to clinch the match and give the Huskies the victory.
UConn will stay in Storrs and host Merrimack and Siena on Saturday in a pair of dual matches starting at 11:00 am.
